SAN JOSE, CALIF. What is the greatest gift that you have ever received? Evergreen students were answering this very question at Silver Creek Academy’s Speech Contest held at JFS School on January 20th. “The students were phenomenal and the speeches far exceeded my expectations,” said judge Annette Mezzina after the completion of the event. Earning the top prize in each grade level were Shreya Vemulapalli (first grade), Sidak Kaur (second grade), Angelina Chou (third grade), Zachary Tran (fourth grade), Hannah Thomas (fifth grade), and Karan Chahal (sixth grade). “The speech contest was a huge success! We wanted to offer the students an opportunity to challenge themselves, step outside of their comfort zone, and practice their public speaking skills in a positive environment,” said Silver Creek Academy owner and teacher Shelley Swircek. Voted the Bay Area’s Best Learning Center by Bay Area Parent Magazine for five years, the Academy proudly offers its students alternative approaches to learning in a supportive and motivating environment with credentialed instructors. The academy offers courses in many subjects including writing, reading comprehension, math, logic, foreign languages and individual tutoring. SAN JOSE, CALIF. - Third time's a charm for the Silver Creek Academy, the three-time recipient of Bay Area Parent's coveted Best of the Best Award. The award is given to the Best Enrichment and Tutoring Center, as voted on by Bay Area Parent readers, community members and parents. Winning the award for the third time since 2009, the Silver Creek Academy is eager to live up to its title as "the best of the best" and continue to be a resource for the Evergreen community and San Jose area.

According to owner and credentialed teacher Shelley Swircek, "Our primary focus is, and will always be, the students. We are their resource, we are their advocates, we are their biggest supporters inside and outside of the classroom."
As an enrichment and tutoring academy, SCA offers a wide variety of small group classes that focus on the individual needs of each student. Classes offered by the academy, designed for grades pre-K through high school, cover writing, reading comprehension, logic and critical thinking, mathematical problem solving, public speaking, debate, test prep and college preparatory guidance.

All of these courses, Shelley Swircek says, are designed to help students not only understand the subject matter they are learning, but to master it. After the success and growth of the first five years, SCA moved into a larger facility just a few doors down at the Canyon Creek Plaza. This success has led to additional classes and the creation of a college preparatory guidance and enrichment program known as START, which stands for Support through Teaching, Academics, Resources and Tutoring. The program is aimed at helping students gain the invaluable experience and confidence they need to tackle that next academic phase in their lives. "The focus of the Academy has always been to help our students thrive academically and socially. With the START program, we're providing that same support and advocacy to our students as they embark upon high school and college," said Kendra Fujino, the START program's lead instructor.
Year-round, students may register for the Academy's small group classes, private tutoring, or workshops and seminars aimed at expanding their repertoire. And with such a wide variety of services, the academy continues to build upon their reputation as the community's "best of the best." SAN JOSE, Calif. - Since when is silver the top prize? When it's the Silver Creek Academic Academy and the honor is being named "Best of the Best" Tutoring or Enrichment Center 2009 and 2010 by Bay Area Parent Magazine. Selected by local parents, students and educators, the supplemental education program is earning prestige for its one-on-one instructional approach to enhancing student achievement - both in and outside the traditional classroom in a variety of studies.

Silver Creek Academic Academy is the brainchild of teacher-turned-tutor entrepreneur Shelley Swircek, who after 7 years of classroom teaching recognized a need to offer students personalized direction to hone not just their academic process, but their life skills. She began two years ago by targeting disciplines like public speaking, reading, writing, and logic and critical thinking.

But as the Academy gained popularity among students and parents alike, Swircek expanded the center. By the following year she added more classes and hired additional teachers. This year, in light of budget cuts in the public school system, Swircek believes the services offered through Silver Creek Academic Academy are all the more important. "We want to be a resource that really responds to the community's needs," she said. "As that need grows, so will we."

While other businesses are forced to scale back during rough economic conditions, the Academy is adding even more staff to its roster and will roll out several new courses beginning this winter - including Mathematical Reasoning and Problem Solving, Test Prep, Computer Skills, and additional public speaking, reading, and writing classes, such as a Harry Potter literary analysis course that is unique to the Academy. Unlike some establishments, which rely on non-credentialed teachers and college students to teach classes, only highly qualified, fully credentialed, and experienced educators, are hired to teach classes at Silver Creek Academy.

Amidst the expansion, Swircek says the mission of the program is pretty clear cut and remains the same. The Academy is designed to inspire each child to rediscover his or her innate passion for learning through positive exploration and integrated challenges. "We want kids to be intrinsically motivated to learn for the sake of learning - not just to get a grade."

She believes at the core of that mission is a dedication to capping class sizes and employing only certified teachers who deliver innovative lessons that align with state standards. "We hire only the very best instructors that share the teaching philosophies of Silver Creek Academic Academy," Swircek said. "All lead teachers are fully credentialed, have taught in the district for numerous years, and are experts in grade level assessments, expectations and standards. I believe our quality of instruction is what sets the Academy apart from the rest."

In addition to Swircek, Academy teachers include Lori Jenkins, an elementary school veteran from the Evergreen School District; Susan Shirley, lead writing teacher for Evergreen School District, Erika Byrum, who taught multiple grade levels at Tom Matsumoto School, Michael Johnson, veteran teacher in Santa Clara Unified School District, and Margaret Shin Hoang, a third grade teacher from the Evergreen School District who will be teaching the Art Exploration classes beginning in the summer.
